Third summit, glorious day now. Long day into the wilds. Camped at Iron Lodge especially to do this peak. Very wet and boggy involving two river crossings with boots and trousers off. Went straight for the top, no paths up the side of the mountain - up and own due to numerous streams cut into the side. Path on top coming from Glen Affric.Snowing on top in August. No views from top but cleared on the way down to make it all worth while. With E. Parked at Glen Affric forestry commission car park. Along track past Affric Lodge > path up by Allt Coire Leachavie > Mam Sodhail > Carn Eighe and return same route. The descent off Mam Sodhail to Carn Eighe is steep and trickier than it looks on the map so contoured around on return journey. Weather superb after brief early shower giving excellent views. A tough day. Club weekend staying at Strawberry cottage Completed Beinn Fhionnlaidh and Carn Eighe, Track near Affric Lodge N, then W across moorland to Sgurr na Lapaich, along ridge via Mullach Cadha Rainich to Mam Sodhail, then N to Beinn Fhionnlaidh (contouring past Carn Eige on W side), via Stob Coire Lochan, returned over Carn Eige, then along E ridge over Stob a' Choire Dhomhain, Stob Coire Dhomhnuill, Sron Garbh, then descended to Gleann nam Fiadh to follow track out, but it was in such poor condition that I crossed the river and took the track S direct back to Affric Lodge. Cross the bridge over the Uisge Misgeach and follow the pipe uphill and into Garbh Coire. A huge cairn is built on the top - this was the first trangulation point used by the OS in Scotland - it now makes a fine shelter in which to get out of the wind. View Gallery. This is a #nofilter beauty from one of my forest walks near Fort Augustus. South-west and on a faint path, a narrow bealach leads to Mullach na Dheiragain. The bulky twins Carn Eige and Mam Sodhail are the highest in Scotland north of the Great Glen. The first of several ascents. The summit reached from Mam Sodhail in clearing weather&period. The summit is a fine place to stop and take in the views, particularly towards Lurg Mhor and Loch Monar, and there's a decent cairn to shelter out of the wind.
